Roger Sabon

The richness of a territory, the identity of a Domaine

Some imports stem from a product. Others arise from a relationship built over time.

Roger Sabon’s wines have been part of our selection for fourteen years. It is a relationship built over time through dialogue with Didier—the owner and winemaker—as well as a deep familiarity with his wines and an appreciation for the terroir from which they originate, in the heart of the Rhône Valley.

Among the most renowned Rhône appellations is Châteauneuf-du-Pape, where the soil still tells the story of the river today. The galets roulés—large, rounded pebbles carried by the Rhône—absorb the sun’s heat during the day and slowly release it at night, aiding the ripening of the grapes.

Alongside the pebbles, one finds clays, sands, and calcareous soils—a diversity of soil types that helps define the identity of the wines.

Roger Sabon’s parcels

The estate, founded in 1952, currently cultivates 18 hectares in Châteauneuf-du-Pape spread across 14 parcels, in addition to vineyards in Lirac and Côtes-du-Rhône.

A distinctiveness that Roger Sabon expresses through vineyard work, but also through one of the most important characteristics of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape tradition: the art of blending.

the art of blending

In Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Grenache forms the base of the blend, while Syrah, Cinsault, and Mourvèdre contribute distinct characteristics that define the wine’s structure, freshness, aromatic profile, and depth.

For Roger Sabon, the blend is the result of seeking the right balance between the different varieties and the characteristics of the individual plots. This is how each component finds its role in the final wine.

The diverse facets of Roger Sabon

The selection we have chosen to import showcases this ability to interpret the Rhône through wines that vary in style and appellation.

  • Plaisir Blanc blends Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Viognier, and Roussanne into a fresh, mineral, and aromatic white wine, where the absence of oak allows the grapes to express themselves fully.
  • Le Sabounet—predominantly Grenache, with Cinsault and minor varieties—focuses on fruit and freshness, offering an immediate and enjoyable drinking experience.
  • The Rhône by Roger Sabon—a Côtes-du-Rhône made from Grenache, Syrah, and Cinsault—expresses the appellation’s Mediterranean character through fruit, spice, and structure.
  • Châteauneuf-du-Pape Réserve represents one of the estate’s most profound expressions: Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, combined with extended aging in large oak vessels, give rise to a wine that is expansive, complex, and deeply rooted in the appellation.
  • Le Secret des Sabon represents one of the estate’s most sought-after expressions. The secret behind this cuvée lies in its old Grenache vines. The winemaking process is designed to showcase the grape variety in its most elegant form, with balance, freshness, and tannic structure defining a wine that is profound, expansive, and generous.

For us at Poggiana, continuing to bring Roger Sabon to Italy means sharing an estate that interprets the Rhône through its terroir, specific vineyard plots, and the balance between different grape varieties.

Knowing the territory to tell its wine.
